WINDERMERE CAMPING AND CARAVANNING CLUB SITE
I'd read previous reviews so was looking out for the horrible turning onto the site road and as a result we didn't miss it. One word of caution tho...slow down as much as possible before you exit the A591 or your suspension will never forgive you!!
On arrival the staff were very pleasant and welcoming and a kind gentleman showed us to our pitch. We had requested to be close to the amenities but not on top of them. We were told we were in an area that they placed couples. It was very convenient for both the toilet block and the pub/reception.
The ground was not too bad as previous reviewed had complained of very hard ground. However we did bend quite a few of our pegs and even managed to snap one in half.
At roughly 8pm a family were shown to the pitch next to ours. It was already dusk. The gentleman in this party began erecting the tent and was quickly approached by a young man from the next tent with an offer of help. He refused...bad move!! The couple struggled to pitch this massive tent with a grumpy, over tired toddler around their ankles. Before long they couldn't see what they were doing and had to re position their car to be able to use the headlights. Between a crying child, a thumping mallet, headlights bleating and a couple who were losing their temper with not only the tent but each other it was not the best way to be winding down after a long day. Things quiet ended down just before the 11pm noise abatement order!! So much for a couples area!!!
We had a bit of a shock at approx 11pm when the empty bottles from the pub were tipped into the recycle bin just to the left of our tent. Luckily we hadn't fallen to sleep by then (due to the guys next door) as the noise this caused would have woken us with a start. At roughly 5:30am the daily papers arrived (could also have been the milk). Whoever the delivery person was left the car/van running the whole time they made their delivery. This did wake us.
On our second night we decided to have a drink in the pub. £6 for a bottle of Bud and a bitter shandy! There were a couple of rowdy soles leaving the pub at kicking out but I wasn't too bothered by this. I think the 10:30pm last orders and close by 11pm is very reasonable.
The site was very well kept and the toilets were impeccable. The site staff were truly lovely and so friendly and made the negatives all that much easier to bare.
I'd most definitely stay here again but I'd make sure I packed plenty of fly spray at its on of the necessities not sold in the site shop.
Stayed September 2014, travelled as a couple
